Introduction to Design Assignment: Summary

Throughout this assignment, I learned about so many elements of graphic design that I had not previously considered nor even heard of, quite honestly. I very much benefited from learning about the use and manipulation of colors in images. I have never really thought about the way that colors could bring certain feelings to the surface when viewing a graphic design or photo. This assignment made me think about how most items that I own and many designs that I favor primarily feature warm colors; this implies that I am searching for colors that provide happiness, joy, and possibly even anger, depending on the specific color. I also very much enjoyed learning about symmetry and rhythm in photographs. This is because I observed both concepts in so many scenes around me after reading and learning about them and their significance throughout this assignment to the point that it was difficult for me to narrow down which examples I wanted to use for my Design Photo Safari/Blitz. I found it very interesting and surprising to learn that patterns via rhythm can evoke emotions from the viewer in combination with the use of certain colors. I also now understand how visually appealing symmetry can be in graphic design, but how asymmetry can be valued in certain situations as well. Overall, all of these concepts apply to what I learned in The Vignelli Canon; using various concepts, such as rhythm, colors, negative space, dominance, proportion, or balance can and should be effective in solving problems for clients or yourself as the viewer of your final work. Therefore, I think that the most valuable piece of information that I learned was that viewing your surroundings with these specific concepts in mind can completely transform how you see the world and lend itself to more in-depth, interesting designs.

Something that was harder than I thought it would be during this assignment was creating stories that went well with my edited images for the three assignments from the Design Assignment Bank. This is because, while I have experience with writing short fictional stories, figuring out where to start and how to end the story were the hardest part, given that the only prompt was a picture that I had edited or created myself. I had to take myself out of the picture, meaning that I had to forget the original context surrounding when and why I took the original picture, and replace it with the mindset of an author being presented with an idea. I have not done a lot of fictional or creative writing recently, so going back to when I learned how to do so was difficult at the beginning and end of the stories. Pacing them in a way that was somewhat mysterious yet also sensical was difficult as well. What I found to be easiest throughout this assignment was completing the visual part of the assignments from the bank. I had fun doing so, as I was able to get my creative juices flowing in terms of the graphic design concepts that I had just learned about in the previous readings. As far as what drove me crazy, I think that having to write so much for every single element of the assignment drove me a bit crazy, simply because as I mentioned above my creative writing skills are still a bit rusty; the last time I had to write creatively was in a class that I took my freshman year of college.

In terms of what I enjoyed throughout this assignment, I very much found pleasure in taking pictures of my surroundings. I live in such a beautiful setting, and I am always excited to explore it further. I was so excited every time that I saw a concept that I had just learned about through the articles and videos for this assignment in real life. Getting the correct angle was fun as well due to how I saw the same scene from different angles in multiple photos. I enjoyed these elements of the Design Blitz in particular because of how much I love being in nature and seeing it from a variety of perspectives as opposed to bland, boring items that can be found in a city. Living in the country has so many benefits, and finding beautiful examples of concepts such as balance, proportion, dominance, and more is extremely satisfying.
