Design Assignment 1: Contradiction Creation

‘How are we going to get this message out to anyone? How is this going to be possible?!’ Carly yelled, her voice rising in intensity as she continued her endless rant about the current state of the world. ‘You know, Carly, I am not sure that the zombies will go away’ because you are frustrated and yelling but keep trying! Maybe it will work…maybe after the fourth hour of yelling!‘ Mack retorted, becoming equally as venomous as his partner. ‘I- I’m sorry, Mack,’ Carly said, her voice now in a horse whisper. ‘I’m just so scared. Where are they coming from? What are we supposed to do? We’re just college students who work as lab aides twice a week,’ she said. ‘I know. I know, Carly. But, what else can we do? Go in the bunker with everyone else who is just as scared and not doing anything about it?‘ Mack asked. ‘You are more than welcome to do that, but I am going to stay here and keep designing fliers. Maybe it will work,’ he said, but even he heard the dejection in his own voice as the words dribbled out of his mouth. He wasn’t even sure what ‘it’ was anymore. He was grasping at straws, and even he knew it.

I’m not going anywhere, Mack, and you know that,’ Carly spat back at him, almost as if she had been challenged. We are going to make as many fliers as we can, and we are going to make them as quickly as we can so that they get everyone’s attention, and fast,’ she said, slowly gaining back her spark and desire to fight. Mack and Carly had been in college at the University of California Berkeley when the alarms first sounded. They were so shrill and ear-piercing that they thought the purge had started. When the sirens suddenly stopped, every student on campus sighed a breath of relief. Unfortunately, this feeling was to be short-lived. These alarms were the start of the terrifying Zombie invasion that spread like a flesh-eating virus across the United States and is still thriving three months later. Mack and Carly were doing anything that they can, even if it was making fliers that they printed by the thousands, to warn people in foreign countries of what was happening in the United States. They needed to get the word out to people who may not know, even though this group of people may not still exist. Making pointless fliers was better than going insane, trapped in a damp, dark underground storage room with a thousand unsanitary college students and angry professors.

Suddenly, Carly started laughing. It started as a soft chuckle to herself, so Mack thought he misheard. But, across the span of a minute or so, she was fully belly laughing. She threw her head back, mouth wide open in laughter, then looked down at the piece of paper in front of her. She had made a flier, it seemed.  Mack was unsure about what was so funny about that, considering why they were making them in the first place. He was so confused as to how and why she would be laughing at a time like this. He put down his own pencil, and slowly walked over to her sheet of paper. The paper detailed a beautiful meadow filled with small, intricate purple flowers. There was a purely blue sky in the background; that was something Mack hadn’t seen in weeks. The words STAY INSIDE were inscribed right below a set of majestic, snow-capped mountains. Mack looked at Carly, deciding at that moment that she had finally lost her mind. ‘Why would she put this gorgeous picture behind these harrowing words that were meant to scare the viewer,’ he was about to ask, but when he saw it. Carly was crying from the fullness of her own laughter. She felt liberated, and he could tell. He thought to himself, ‘I’ll let her have this one. If we can’t laugh anymore, then I don’t want to even bother with the flyers, much less stay on this hellhole of an earth,’ he thought, smiling to himself. Maybe they were going to be okay after all.
